External Hard Drive

After hooking up my WD my book for Mac external hard on my new computer will not work. If I go to WD drive utilities or WD security it says, attach a supported WD drive. I have O S X EL Capitan installed on the computer. Can i just uninstall the drive?

Have you done this:

1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

2. After Disk Utility loads select the out-dented drive entry for the WD drive from the left side list. Click on the Erase or Partition icon in the Disk Utility toolbar depending on which is not grayed out. If the Partition icon is active, then select the indented volume from the left side list and use the Erase icon.

3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

Now see if the drive appears.

HI Kappy

I tried to respond yesterday, but i't didn't go through. I didn't try it yet because my book for Mac is just for Mac's, It says requires formatting for windows operating. It says compatibility, Formated HFS+ journaled for Mac OS X Yosemite, Mavericks or Mountain Lion. I have OS X el Capitan v10.11.3 on my Mac. Could this be the reason it froze up. This is my first Mac, I have only had it a little over a month. Quite a challenge. I got it mainly for FaceTime. All e3 grand kids have apple I Pads and I have a new great grand daughter. Face Time sure makes it nice to see and talk to them, since they are all over the place. I unhooked the hard drive, do you know if I can just uninstall it?

Thanks Bud
