Cannot use text message forwarding on my mac

I have set up text message forwarding for my MacBook and my iPad. I used to have it work for my iMac, but it stopped working. I turned that device off and on under messages - settings - text message forwarding. But a code never shows up on the iMac. Any ideas? I tried rebooting boththe iMac and the phone.
