I have an iPhone 6 and all software is up to date. I am messaging another iPhone and their phone number used to come up as an iMessage, now it is going through as a SMS message. His email comes up as available for iMessage but not the phone number. I have reset my iMessage 3x and it still shows that way. Any suggestions.

More than likely it is on the receiver's end. I would have them check their settings, first that iMessage is activated, and then if it shows their phone number as a method for Send & Receive.
I am looking at his phone. iMessage is on and it does show the phone number and the email as active. Anything else I can check?
Does he have an active data connection (either Wifi or cellular)? If the answer to that is yes, try turning off iMessage on his phone then turning it back on again.
Had him turn off iMessage and turn off his phone. Still not show as an active iPhone on my phone.
Delete all prior messages to that phone number on your phone.
Deleted all messages from him on my phone. Going to restart my phone. The weird thing is, his number is coming through correctly on my iPad.
Try this: turn off iMessage on your iPad and your iPhone. Turn it back on on your iPhone. Once it's complete activated, turn it back on on your iPad.
Turned off my iMessage, restarted my iPhone. Deleted his contact and reentered it. Still the same issue. His phone number isn't working but his email address is. I just can't figure this out?
Turn off iMessage on BOTH your iPad and your iPhone. Then, turn it back on on your iPhone first. When it's active, turn it back on on the iPad.
Turned off iMessage on iPad, iPhone and my laptop. Restarted everything. iPad shows everything both his number and email as active in iMessage. On my phone, only his email shows as active in iMessage not his phone number.
I had sent a message from my laptop to his iPhone number, then had him reply to me. Now his number is coming up as being active in iMessage. I wonder if it just got in some kind of loop on my phone or if it just finally reset itself. Thank Meg St._Clair for your help.
Ah, you didn't mention you also had a Mac laptop. Yes, having all three, only one of which has a phone number, can cause confusion sometimes.
Turning iMessage off everywhere you are logged into it, then turing it back on first on the phone lets they system know to use the phone number, it seems. If you activate one of the non-phone devices first, sometimes they don't behave properly.
