It sounds like you are trying to get to the keypad after you've started a call but the screen stays black and will not return to the options on the screen. This could indicate an issue with the proximity sensor, or with the software on the phone. I would start by quitting the Phone and the Settings apps on the phone:
1. Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps.
2. Swipe left to find the app you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself. Now if none of that works then I would say there is an issue with the sensor and set up service for it:
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Feb 17, 2016 1:52 PM in response to sterling rby SilverBear,I've restored an iphone once before and it was not a fun experience for me, ha! I've done what you said (I love that often the biggest and easiest fix for boo-boos and go-wrongs is simply to cut it off and cut it back on and it rights itself). You were very thorough and I appreciate your quick response. Let's hope I don't have a sensor problem. My friend has had the same thing happening lately so a bug? At any rate you get an A+ from me.
