Q: Cannot access my display to touch a keyboard while on a call

Recently my iPhone will not allow me to access my phone's keyboard while on the phone.  For example I had a service call for my appliance this morning and the robo confirm the appt call said press any keyboard number to confirm and I could NOT access the numeric pad (keyboard) to confirm.  The entire screen was black.  I just kept tapping the screen until it appeared.  What's going on?

    Hi there SilverBear,

It sounds like you are trying to get to the keypad after you've started a call but the screen stays black and will not return to the options on the screen. This could indicate an issue with the proximity sensor, or with the software on the phone. I would start by quitting the Phone and the Settings apps on the phone:

Force an app to close in iOS

    1. Press the Home button two times quickly. You'll see small previews of your recently used apps.
    2. Swipe left to find the app you want to close.
    3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close it.

When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:

iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.

How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.

Now if none of that works then I would say there is an issue with the sensor and set up service for it:

I've restored an iphone once before and it was not a fun experience for me, ha!  I've done what you said (I love that often the biggest and easiest fix for boo-boos and go-wrongs is simply to cut it off and cut it back on and it rights itself).  You were very thorough and I appreciate your quick response.  Let's hope I don't have a sensor problem.  My friend has had the same thing happening lately so a bug?  At any rate you get an A+ from me.
