how to switch default email from Apple to Google on a macbook air with OS X?

Using OS X on a Macbook Air, how do I switch the default email server from Apple mail to Google mail?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), iOS 9.2.1

Default email reader?

Mail > Preferences > General > Default email reader:

Click "Select" and choose the reader you want.

Sometimes you may have to open the application folder to find it.

When I open mail, the program remains open for several seconds such as 15" and then shuts down with a dialogue box that states that the Mail program shut down unexpectedly and do I want to send a message to Apple. I sent 5 or 10 messages.

Do you why the mail program is shutting down?
