Q: Messages doesn't store chats with bonjour anymore

After the last El Capitan update, the Messages app stopped to work in our local network.

At the moment you can see accounts when starting the app (The computers are visible in the shared section in Finder, too) like here:

Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 17.37.28.png

If we add "Freelancer" to a chat it is working, but there are no banners on new messages, even they are activated in System preferences. And the Avatar is not displayed.

Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 17.37.07.png

After you close Messages (and storing of chats is activated in it's preferencesy) and restart the app, the conversation and the account are gone.

Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 18.40.01.png

If i double click the "Freelancer" in the friends section, i get a Freelancer chat back to the "Chatroom" and it has the same address like as we started, but the conversation is gone.

Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 18.40.10.png

The avatar is displayed, now, but when we restart the messages app again, the account is gone again.

Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 18.45.03.png

This wired behavior is on several (all) computers (El Capitan 10.11.3), now, in the local network.

Is there any idea how we can bring back the Messages App just working?....

Maybe there is an issue with Bonjour, but i do not know what it could be as the computers appear in finder and the accounts will be recognized in Messages, too. But i do get Notices for incoming messages in chats, when i change the notification rule in system preferneces to "always". If i alter it to "If not locked, i will still get notices, now.

But after i restart the messages app, i won't get any notifications anymore... so somehow Messages does not realize that it is connected to the same accounts after restart while marking the accounts identically to the ones used before closing the app... But where should one fix this maybe bonjour related problem? Any idea?

I deleted the com.apple.imessages.bag.plist but it was not recreated.

    I can't find any com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist.

    Hi,

This is not important to Bonjour

    I can't find any com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist.

I take it that in Messages > Preferences > Accounts only the Bonjour Account is Active ?

There is no iMessages account active and you are not using AIM, Jabber or Yahoo either ?

Your third picture is normal for the "To" spot.

If you are talking to someone then it is greyed out as it is already active. (if the text itself is Blank as another clue)

At this point if you type and send then the "history" should be shown if it was saved properly.

That then makes us look at picture 2 and also the Saved Chats folder.

In the Finder use the Go Menu > Go to Folder and copy and paste ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages into the dialogue Box that appears  (you may have to translate if the System is not set to English).

In the Messages folder should be the Archive Folder.

I use Cover Flow and also use the View menu in the Finder to display the Modified column.

The Folders should be dated  and then you should be able to open them and see the saved Chat.

If you double click the last chat is should open a second window of just that Chat for "Today"

    Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 20.33.56.png

In this Pic I have placed it over the Main window version.

If it is not there then there are two possibles.

    1) You do not have permission to Write to the Archive folder.

    2) You are using Delete in the Chat before Saving and Quitting.

    Screen Shot 2016-02-15 at 20.36.46.png

So as a start do the Saved Chats show up at all ?

Do they have any Content ?

In the Finder can you log on to the other computer ? (is Bonjour fully working ?)

How are you quitting Messages ?

It sounds like you are just selecting the Quit Option and things are not opening up in the same place you left them.

    Dear Ralph,

the third picture shows how the Freelancer-account gets empty and called "New Messages". So Messages app loses the connection between chats and accounts.

The chats are stored on the machines and i can see them if i open these in the container:

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 21.48.48.png

But either these stored chats do not appear (and they won't even the user is online) in the account or more worse: the account is simply being empty and renamed to "New Messages". It sometimes will reconnect to the account it belonged to after clicking the "old name" in the friends list, but messages are gone. If i delete the chat, close Messages, open it again, double click the friend the whole history of the chat (which was deleted) reappears sometimes. But will disappear again, after a new restart of the app and the connection is again lost and messages are gone...

    Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 21.50.49.png

I can log into all other computers and administrate them directly with shared option or with Remote Desktop, too.

I worked for half a year, now and we did not change any behavior but updated the last version of El Capitan...

Any idea how to fix this broken Messages?

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,

Bonjour in iChat and in early version of Messages had a separate .plist called com.apple.iChat.Subnet.plist

This no longer exists in later versions.

It would appear that some of the info about this is now stored in com.apple.ichat.plist.

There are then several factors about how the "history" is displayed.

To Write to the com.apple.ichat.plist several thing need to work.

You need to Own and have permission to Write to the end file.

You also need to Own and have permission to Write to the Folder it is in (in this case ~/Library/Preferences)

Next you needs to be able to use the Containers folder I listed earlier so that the Write route to the File is actually ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ichat/Data/Library/Preferences where you will find Aliases to the items in ~/Library/Preferences.

In addition the ~/Library/Messages chat.db items also need your to be able the Read and Write to them so that they summarise the Saved Chats.

That can be a lot of manual checking of Files and Folders.

It is easier to use Linc's Green Marked Reply in this thread Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs Error and reset the whole ~/Library folder and it's many sub contents folders.

I have all permissions for these files. User accounts are o.k.

But, i reset all filepermissions for one of these accounts, just to double check and it did not change anything. Accounts get lost, still...

Maybe the database is corrupt? Is there a way to rebuilt it?

Or is there just a way to reset the whole app, like it is possible for any other app, too? We do not need any of the old chats but only the program working...

I don't understand, why the messages are all stored but, why Messages gets somehow "blind". It seems like it doesn't remember the accounts. Like there was a corrupt storage of these chats and when Messages opens again, it doesn't know whose chats these are.

What i see, now, the same chat from Freelancer is sometimes stored as (null) e.g.

    ~/Library/Messages/Archive/2016-02-15/(null) am 2016-02-15 um 20.36.10.ichat

but it should be similar to

    ~/Library/Messages/Archive/2016-02-15/Freelancer am 2016-02-15 um 20.34.00.ichat

    Hi,

    This path looks odd

    ~Library/Messages/Archive/2016-02-15/Freelancer am 2016-02-15 um 22.16.42.ichat

    It should be ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages

The chat.db items should be in ~/Library/Messages

Based on the other error messages I would tend to Restore the OS.

The OS is working quite fine (remeber we are not talking about one computer but 5 different machines with the same app-problem). I think at the moment it is only the Messages app which goes crazy... so restoring the OS is not quite the fix i should be...

Is there a way to reset Messages?

    Hi Ralph,

i made some more tests and it seems not to be a Problem of Messages app itself. I guess it is some Bonjour problem, but i do not know what we can do to find the issue, now. I tested the behavior with completely new accounts and new machines and the problem stays.

    - i can connect to each machine with finder and screensharing without any problems.

    - all machines have individual LocalHostNames, ComputerNames and HostNames.

What i additionally recognized is, that while chating with one friend this friend get suddenly offline while he is still connected and chating in Messages. We do not suffer any network issues so something got wind up in the Bonjour/DNS settings maybe, but how can i find this issue, know?

    Any idea?

    Hi Ralph,

that sounds absolutely reasonable. But it implies that the last update of El Capitan - on all machines - would have crashed the DNS service and Messages app at the same time! Do they still have programmers in Cubertino or do they only earn money, now? 11.3 should be called 3.11 (Windows) where apps were able to crash the whole system...

I will give it a try on one Computer and see if an installation of the system files will bring back DNS service and Messages.
