OS upgrade - can i skip levels?

I have a late 2011 mac book pro running Lion. I want to upgrade the OS. Can i go directly from Lion to Yosemite or El Capitan or should i upgrade step by step - Lion to Mtn lion, then to Mavericks, then to Yosemite…?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

You can only download either the "latest" (ElCapitan, for now) or one you downloaded previously (and the App Store remembers). ML can be purchased from online Apple store, but not worth in in most cases.

But ... to your "jump" question ... you can go directly from Lion to ElCapitan. Just be sure you have a very good backup of your current system in case something goes wrong or in case you want to go back.
