built in internal microphone and meter not working

I have a 2011 27 in IMAC ; OS X EL Capitan Version 10.11.3; Processor 2.7 Ghz IntelCore i5; Memory, 16 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3

When attempting to talk to (dictate) my computer and/or use the audio/video apps for phone calls, and/or shooting videos, I cannot be heard by the person I am speaking with. I am able to hear and see the person with whom I am attempting to speak. Subsequently I have checked System Preferences>Sound> Built In Internal Microphone> Settings and discovered the Microphone is not working. The Input volume level meter is not working either. I don't know if this is a software or hardware problem. Please help1

(I don't know if the microphone is tested during the test)

Tony T1.....thanks for the information. I ran the test and there were no errors noted. I have no way of knowing iif the microphone was tested. So, I am right back where I started.

If the link to https://www.onlinemictest.com/microphone-settings/mac-os-x didn't help either (try the PRAM reset noted there), then you may have to bring it in to an Apple Store for them to check.
