how to format external HD with El Capitan

Earlier, I had disc utility app and it was showing me all what it can do. After el Capitan, today I checked the same app but this time, i could not find how to make a partition, or format my external disc.

How should I do it?

In Disk Utility select the top icon for your drive and click on Erase button. That will give you this:

To partition again click on the top icon for your drive and select Partition:

In the next window move the circular slider until you get the partition sizes you want and click on Apply:

It should be in the Applications/Utilities folder. If it is not there or in the Applications folder, see if you can find it using one of the 2 programs below.

EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement

Find Any File

If you still can't find the program, do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart) and select Recovery Volume. Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.

OS X Recovery
