Q: Photos Lockups El Capitan

I have a mid-2010 MacMini with a 1tb 7200rpm drive and 16gb of RAM with 50% or more of the drive space available.  I upgraded from Lion to El Capitan, which means I had to migrate from iPhoto to Photos.  I migrated my iPhoto libraries (40gb+) to Photos.  Recently I have been importing photos scanned from a negative scanner into a brand new Photos library.  I have approximately 6,000 photos (+/- 25gb) in the library and when I attempt to turn on Faces and type in a name for a face the program quits responding, and I mean quits responding FOREVER.  I thought I would try creating a new library with one photo and see if it does the same, but even now I cannot even create a new library without Photos locking up tighter than a drum.  I have rebuilt the library to no avail.

Is there some kind of Photos cache or something that I clear out that may be hanging the system?

Thanks!

Tom

When you import photos there are a number of background processes that get triggered including face scans, possibly ICPL uploads and indexing amoung others - usually the solution is to give is a few days to finish these background processes

But what about creating a new library with the option+click menu?  The program shouldn't be doing anything at this point because I have yet to open a library but it locks up if I click "Create New Library."

I am able to select an existing library and open it, but even in another library it locks up if I try to name a face, which is what made me question if there is some kind of cache that could be corrupted that I could just delete.

I let Photos sit and then brought up Activity monitor and Photos was sitting idle.  No CPU usage, and no disk activity.  I double clicked a face in Faces and as soon as I press the key for first character of the name the program stops responding.  It doesn't even put the letter in the box.  This has happened a dozen times today and I keep sending the report to Apple because I have to force quit the app.  At one point I left the app running (not responding) to see if it will eventually wake up, but after three hours I had to force quit it.

Is there another program that works?  Arpeture, Lightroom?  I really liked iPhoto and it seemed to be pretty rock solid.  This Photos app seems to be crap.

I was able to get the problem solved.  Since Photos is an integral part of Mac OS X, it appears that it also relies upon iCloud, even if you're not using iCloud to store or share your photos.  My iCloud account was corrupt and could not connect to the CalendarAgent, which also prevented the contacts from working.  As it turns out, I deleted the ~/Library/Application Support/iCloud folder and ~/Library/Preferences/Mobile*.plist file and this fixed everything.  I was also having issues with Messages and Safari, as well as a host of other native apps to Mac OS X.  Everything is working fine again.
