Feb 15, 2016 4:45 PM in response to greenleeshby K Shaffer,Not sure if an update of the Safari would help, or if you could get one for your OS X.
If your system is still running Mavericks 10.9.5, the most recent Safari is 9.0.3 now.
This was part of a security update, so you may be wise to click on App Store in dock
to see what the Updates section has for your Mac.
Mine is running Safari, Version 9.0.3 (9537.86.4.4) in Mavericks OS X 10.9.5 system
build 13F1603 in a Late 2012 Mac Mini i7 (2.3GHz quad-core). So maybe the version
of Safari has an issue. This browser has been upgraded within App Store in OS X.
My main web browser in use, but not set as default, is Firefox 44.0.2 and it works well.

You could get and try it from the Mozilla Firefox site; it may be OK as an alternative
for some or most aspects of your browsing necessities; there are extras from maker.
There may something you can do in your OS X and in Safari to help it handle those files...
But there also should be an update to the older version that shipped with Mavericks 10.9.5.
See this for the most recent 19 January 2016 Safari security update (takes Safari to 9.0.3)
and would normally be applied from your App Store in the Mac's application...

Another idea would be to look into the ownership privileges and permissions of those files.
Good luck & happy computing!

Feb 16, 2016 4:36 PM in response to K Shafferby greenleesh,I just updated Safari to the latest update, and that didn't work. So I downloaded Firefox and tried, and it didn't work either :-(
The files are all documents I created in MS Word, so unless there is some secret lock on the computer I am using, I don't see how licensing could be an issue.
Any other suggestions?
