Will MacOS X support ExpressPCI UL5D?

I have been using a ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D card in my MacPro (MacPro3,1) successfully to gain use of my external SCSI Raid drives that I use in capturing video with no problem ... until I upgraded to MacOS X (El Capitan) and now their nowhere to be found? Help if you can as I don't want to lose all my current captured video.

Mac Pro (Early 2008), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

ElCapitan tightens the requirements around non-Apple extensions. If they are not signed with a Registered Developer certificate, they do not load.

Contact ATTO Tech and see if they have a new driver that is registered with the proper certificate. If not ask them to advise you how they expect you to keep using the card.

ATTO Tech has a long and good relationship with Apple, so there should be no reason for hostilities.

AttoTech appear to have discontinued all their SCSI products including the UL5D card. I have a support account on their website so I was able to login and access their downloads page and see that the latest driver they list for this card and for the Mac only says it supports up to OS X 10.8.5

Mac OS X
Driver Version Description Notes
Mac OS X 10.5.x - 10.8.5
4.43 File Size: 418.46kB
Mac OS driver for ExpressPCI SCSI host adapters. Download this file to your Mac and double click it to launch the driver installation program.
PRN

While it only lists up to 10.8.5 as Mavericks and Yosemite did not make significant changes to the handling of drivers there is a good chance it would also work in those OS X versions as well. However as Grant states El Capitan is far more stringent about drivers and lots were broken by El Capitan. It maybe that turning off SIP protection in El Capitan may be enough to get it working, best thing to do is ask AttoTech for their opinion.

Adaptec were the other major SCSI card adapter manufacturer for Macs but discontinued their Mac products even longer ago. These days the external RAID options are -

  • Thunderbolt (not possible on a classic Mac Pro)
  • eSATA or Mini-SAS
  • FireWire
  • SAN (FDDI connection or iSCSI over Ethernet)
  • USB (classic Mac Pro only comes with USB2 but you can fit a USB3 card however you cannot boot from these cards)

I contacted Tech Support at ATTO. Their reply is below. Bad news. I need a new scanner now, after years of faithful service from my Epson Expression 636 (with transparency adapter).

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately, the older scsi devices don't work with the newer apple operating systems because of old code that they removed. The device works up to Mavericks using the latest software from our site, but will not work on Yosemite or later operating systems.

From here, there's not much to be done other than to change technology or downgrade the operating system.

Thanks,

Subject: New Tech Support Submission

A new form has been submitted from the website:
HW platform: Mac Pro
Driver/Firmware Version: 4.4.3
OS Version: 10.11.3 (El Capitan)
Notes: El Capitan broke the driver for my UL5D card that has been driving my SCSI scanner for years. The thread (
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7463158?start=0&tstart=0) mentions that possibly all that is needed to fix the problem is to update the driver with a signed certificate. I've already tried forcing the system to load unsigned drivers (which worked in Yosemite) but that doesn't work now in El Cap. PLEASE HELP!!! I know this is a d/c'd product, but this seems like an extremely simple fix.
