My iPod Classic needs to be restored but when I connect to my computer it will not connect to iTunes and I get the below image on my iPod.
What can I do to get iTunes to recognise my iPod?

From the picture it seems to be low on power. Eject it from your computer and try charging it up fully using the power adapter. Then try iTunes again.
The charging icon now shows as completely black. So it is fully charged. i must have taken the picture when it was charging.
Have you tried resetting ?

Thanks for this. Unfortunately, all that works is the reset function. Once the apple logo appears no other function works. I tried disc mode and diagnostic mode. I have also tried to format the disc through file explorer but it just freezes!!! Then after 5 to 10 minutes I get a pop-up box that tells me to insert a disc into the drive!!!!
Any other option would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect the drive has failed then. You could try this: http://joshhighland.com/2006/03/29/fix-your-ipod-by-spanking-it/ or you could look into options for replacing the drive.
