Q: Why does my display always switch to horizontal when I am reading mail? I have an ipod 6s

As soon as I go to retrieve my mail, the screen switches to horizontal and is non-responsive to my attempt to make it vertical. I am using an iphone 6S. Has anyone else experienced this?

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2.1
