Q: Three monitors in FCPX

How do I configure use of 3 monitors for editing in FCPX? FCPX does not show available A?V output in preferences.

Thanks, all.

How are you hooking up your monitors? Works a charm on our systems using Thunderbolt Apple monitors.

A/V output can use the HDMI port (if your Mac has one) as a third screen but it's a bit fiddly. A/V output is available, weirdly, under Window menu.

TThe AV output in preferences is to set up third party hardware like AJA.

On my MacPro, which has no third party hardware options onboard, when I plug in a TV set to the HDMI port, the name and model of the TV set instantly populates the A/V Output field in the FCPX Prefs Playback panel. I must do two other things in FCPX to get the TV to work: enable A/V output, under Window, which allows full screen playback of the timeline to the TV; and I often must elect to send the audio to the TV  by option-clicking on the volume control in the upper right menu bar area.

If I don't want the TV to be used for fullscreen playback of the timeline, I don't need to enable either of the A/V settings in FCPX and the TV set just works like a third desktop, as if I had simply plugged in a third Thunderbolt display, configurable in the Display section of System Prefs..

Since we don't know what kind of Mac or monitors the OP is using, I'm just writing to hear myself type.

In my Retina MacBook Pro, I am able to use a regular HDMI monitor as A/V output. This is something that is described here:

Final Cut Pro X: View playback on an external video monitor

I believe this is possible with either the MacPro and the 2013 or later rMBP.

Note that in order for this to work you may have to set the resolution of the HDMI monitor appropriately in System Preferences.

I have not had a chance to try this with three monitors, but I have seen a video of someone showing it working somewhere (I guess it was on youtube).
