Q: New MacBook won't start up- "no symbol"

I bought a Refurbished MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, early 2015) from the Apple Store. Went through set-up but it froze with the spinning wheel icon during set-up. Restarted but now only get a circle with a line-through it ( "no symbol" or prohibition symbol) at start up. Won't go any further. What should I do?

Mac OS X- Gray screen or prohibitory sign appears during startup

    Do the following:

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch

Be sure you have backed up your files because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears.

    Erase the hard drive:

      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the

left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on

the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on

the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.

If you are not able to do the above because the disk fails to appear in Disk Utility, then most likely the disk needs replacing.

The following should help you with Steps 2 and 3 above as they relate to the El Capitan version of Disk Utility.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.
