iPhone shut off at 30% battery and wouldn't turn on until I plugged it in?

I have an iPhone 6 with 16gb of storage. I have never had this issue, or any issue similar to this, before. I am currently up to date on iOS 9.2.1.

I was walking home from school today and while trying to call back my step-mother, my phone (which was at around 35% at this point) shut itself off without any prompting and displayed the little image it displays when your phone's charge is too low and it wants you to plug it in. I proceeded to get home and as soon as the charger was plugged into the phone (like, literally, the split second it was in there fully) the phone showed the white boot up screen and then booted up completely, displayed that it still had around 30% battery left. This caused a huge issue because my family thought something had happened, and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to how to avoid this and fix any lingering issues this might cause.

Also, I wasn't sure where to post this so I sincerely apologize if this wasn't in the right section. Thanks!

I have the same issue here (iPhone 6). I asked my friends about this and many of them had the similar issue. What should we do now?

I HAVE A PERFECT SOLUTION FOR THIS ONE ! 🙂

I was having the same problem. But i logically Found that it switch off at 30% battery and while connect it to charger it suddenly shows 28-30% Battery. So means it does not fully Discharged IT IS THE PROBLEM OF WRONG BATTERY INDICATION.

SO MOST SIMPLE STEP WE JUST HAVE TO DRAIN FULL BATTERY (AS IT SWITCH OFF AT 30%) "AFTER IT SWITCH OFF BY ITS OWN THEN KEEP IT AS IT IS FOR 1-2 DAYS. AND THIS RESULTS IN TOTALLY BATTERY DISCHARGE AND AFTER THAT WAIT, YOU WILL FIND THE PROBLEM IS RESOLVED. "JUST NEED PATIENCE"

REPLY IF ANYONE GET THIS USEFUL :)

The previous post left out from steps, possibly to get you to click the link in the post. Here's the full procedure:

T recalibrate your battery gauge:

  • Charge to 100%
  • Run the battery down until the phone shuts off
  • If it shuts off above 1% charge it for a minute only, then continue running the battery down. Repeat until it makes it to 1% before shutting off
  • Charge it to 100% again

If the battery is not defective this should fix it.

I have an iPhone 6 plus. This is a huge Apple issue, I've had this problem since July 2016, so about 7 or 8 months now. I went to Apple and ultimately they say its a software issue. I think it is THEIR software issue. I know dozens of people who have had this issue even some with an iPad. Apple told me to Restore to original settings, yes that means you don't restore to a Backup.... What a horrendous task trying to get all my info back onto my phone. That restore only temporarily fixed the problem it was back again in a month or two. Random shutdowns still occur, not as frequently. But lately the most consistent occurrence is if my phone gets fairly cold. I was skiing and listening to music and within an hour the phone died. This has been the situation the last 3 times I've had an auto shutdown. Unfortunately my fix is that I carry around a portable charger (not always convenient when out skiing or such). It only has to be plugged in for a few moments, then it restarts and shows the same battery life that it had when it shut-down. Unplug it once restarted and it lasts the rest of the day. Apple needs to address this issue. But rest assured your battery is probably just fine. This is a software issue that appears to be being ignored, I imagine many people go out and buy a new phone! Don't do it. I think it is ridiculous to carry around a charger, or as one person said force restart your phone 15 times. Hopefully apple will figure out the real problem and fix it soon. Sorry if this is not super helpful, but it can help you know it doesn't require a long battery charging session. And you know it's not the battery most likely.

I tried the "recalibration". Didn't work. Back to the store and was told to save data on phone and restart and reload phone as though it was new. So I did that. The phone was fine for about a week and it did it again. Yesterday on yet another trip to the store they replaced my phone!!!!! Hooray!!!! I guess it's the price we pay for all the scum out there that would take advantage and try to get something for nothing that Apple has to really drill down and make sure that a problem is really that. My problem was to the point of inconvenience, not a totally dead phone. So I got through it. Apple took care of me. Just stick with it, document the problem, try to get to the Apple store during and episode. Thanks to all that helped.

I'll try the solutions mentioned here and see if that works. But my question is: Why, having contacted Apple several times about this problem has every "genius", AppleCare, and phone op, been so befuddled by my problem? Like it's the first time they've ever heard of such a thing and that my phone is perfectly fine? I'm willing to give this a shot. The problem is that when a phone behaves this way just prior to warranty expiration it appears as though it's about to become a very expensive paperweight.

Apple replaced my phone. But I received a story on facebook the other day, in Dutch, from my mother in law in The Netherlands. I couldn't read it but my wife explained to me that it was about this problem. It occurs on phones made in the first part of the rollout of the 6s and it appears that they are now changing out batteries for those affected. Maybe where you bought the phone can change it out? Send it to apple?
