How to check and uncheck songs
Why can't I uncheck individual songs?
Try iTunes > Preferences > General > Show List Checkboxes, and use the Songs or other list-based view.

Checkboxes show okay but I used to click on the box at the top of the list to open or close the entire boxes. Can't do that now. Must I handle each box individually? I want to select some but not all to place in a playlist.
Hmm, I'm not sure I know what you mean. You can normally work with a selection, extending with shift-click and adding or removing items with cmd-click, then check or uncheck the selection, drag it to a playlist, etc. Cmd-clicking a checkbox checks or unchecks all tracks in the view.
