Q: App-specific Password Required

My wife is trying to access her Messages in the Settings menu. It's now asking for an app-specific password required screen. Click on "create" and it brings you to the Apple ID site. After signing in to send the code to her phone, where do you input this code? Her iPhone and Pad were synced to send and receive text messages on both devices but for some reason, it stopped working. I tried looking it up on the boards to see what everyone else did to resolve this issue but we can't seem to get past the app-specific password requirement. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry.. are you wanting to know where to use the app specific password that you generated? Or are you having trouble generating one?

Using app-specific passwords - Apple Support

Messages should support the verification code natively, meaning you shouldn't have to use an app specific password.

Are you using 2 Step Verification or 2 Factor Authorization?

She says it's using the two step verification. We're looking for where to use it specifically ... generating the code isn't an issue. Thanks

OK... looks like you just enter it in Messages... they say there are "steps" shown to guide you.

Thanks ... I'll give that a go. Not sure how her iMessage app got set with an app-specific password. So I don't know how to turn that feature off without revoking the password.

Hi, I just had the same thing happen to me so did a quick search and saw this thread. My iMessage is asking for me to log into my iCloud suddenly, and once I put it in, it tells me the same thing - that I need to get an app-specific password. I'm a long time mac user and not at all technically challenged, but this gives me pause because I don't understand - A) why an Apple-app (and not a third-party-app, which is what app-passwords are for) needs me to do this, B) what could have even triggered it, since I was getting message notifications just fine until that message popped up, C) what could be the repercussions even if it's some bug that creeped up (if so, I'm assuming it's because this computer, and probably the OP's wife's computer still have remnants from old OSs before iMessage changed to Messages), since none of my other Apple devices (2 MacBooks, an iPhone, an AppleWatch and an iPad) is asking for it, and I'd be afraid that once I put this in the Mac Pro, there other computers/devices are going to ask for the other app-password, when everything everywhere has been working just fine with the one iCloud password this whole time. And in case somebody knows more about this and it would help to know, I also have 2 step verification enabled, and have had it enabled for years without something like this happen. If you have any more insight into this, I would greatly appreciate the info. For now, I'm just ignoring it, since it usually comes on when I boot up the computer after it being off for some time and I don't really need this system to show me all my messages as well as the other 5 devices.
