Q: El Capitan update - Photo info lost

After upgrading to El Capitan "event" information on photos is lost. Previously we had arranged all photos (about 8,000) in events (with detailed info on location, participants and activities) which was a big amount of work. Now the Apple provided date and location seems all there is available. Does anyone know if and how we can get this information back, please?

Thanks, Anna

I face similar problem with other files and installed applications. I suspect it happens after using VIBER?

This document describes, what Photos will preserve, when migrating an iPhoto library to Photos: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

A Photos library does not have events.  Your iPhoto events will be replaced by albums, and albums do not have a description, so only the names of the events will be preserved, but not the descriptions of the events.

To save your iPhoto event descriptions open your iPhoto library again in iPhoto and copy the event descriptions to the descriptions of the first photo in each event or to another metadata field that will be migrated.  Then migrate it again to Photos.  Or copy the descriptions directly to selected photos in your new Photos library.

To open your iPhoto Library in El Capitan you need iPhoto 9.6.1.  See Barney's User Tip, if you not yet did update to iPhoto 9.6.1    Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store)

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder.

To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.
