Do not attempt to delete files out of the Time Machine backup.. or older backups .. you will do nothing useful and simply make the backup unusable.

This happens because when you update the OS it causes massive changes to the Time Machine backup such that ™ is unable to figure out what is then deletable and what isn't.

Archive your TC to a USB drive of equal size or larger than the TC disk.

Archive will take several hours but once started can be left .. computer won't need to be running.

When finished use erase function and do a quick erase.. it will only take a few minutes. Then start a clean fresh backup on the TC.

Keep the old backups on the USB drive for a few months until you build up enough history you are sure you will not need old files.. you can then delete them and use the USB drive again.
