If you are missing your desktop folder, there are a couple of things you can try. It may sound obvious, but first restart your computer. Do you see the Desktop folder in Finder?
Also try starting the computer in Safe Mode and send an email to yourself attaching a file from the desktop.
If the issue persists, you may need to Re-Index the Spotlight folder, and or restore the desktop folder from Time Machine. The resources below will provide more information.
