Q: Can't install free iMovie on mac

I have the free iMovie on my iPhone 6s but can't install it for free on my macbook 10.8.5. Can't find it under purchase in app store. I use 10.8.5 - the newest OS doesn't work that great with my old mac, so I don't want to update. Is this the reason, why I can't install iMovie from app stpre? Can't I get iMovie free on my mac without updating my OS?

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

iMovie 10 is only free when you buy a new Mac or when you already have iMovie version 9.  The iPhone app doesn't count.  It requires Mavericks (OS 10.9 or later).  (I find iMovie 10.1.1 runs OK under El Capitan on a 2007 Macbook Pro, though  have replaced the HD with an SSD.)
