You should not delete the iPhoto application - it is difficult to impossible to get back
iPhoto is still in your applications folder and still works great (you do need the current version 9.6.1 - if you do not keep your software up to date see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store )
as to Photos the first time you launch it it migrates the last used iPhoto library according to this How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
If that did no happen then you need to figure out why and fix it - one possibility is multiple iPHoto libraries - you can find this by holding down the option key while launching Photos and using the resulting select library window to find and migrate additional iPHoto libraries
TO get more help than that you need to provide more information about what you have, what you had and what you did

Feb 17, 2016 1:40 PM in response to Old Toadby twylashen,I have looked at the side bar and the former albums are not there.
I did what larry suggested and it seems I have two photo libraries now with Photos.
My iphoto library is on an big external hard drive and then there seems a new photo library from when Photos was introduced was created on my computer.
I am not sure how or if I can merge the two libraries.
Do you know if I can?
I certainly don't want to get rid of my iPhoto app until this is resolved.
Thank you.

Feb 17, 2016 3:29 PM in response to twylashenby LarryHN,the only way to merge Photos libraries is using PowerPhotos
and if you have two Photos libraries then you have two iPhoto libraries - migrating from iPHoto Photos does not change the library contents in any way - it is simply a one for one migration of the photos in an iPhoto library
