Bluetooth isn't recognizing mouse and keyboard. New batteries.

MY 2009 iMac keeps losing contact with the mouse and keyboard. It locks down with message saying Bluetooth can't find mouse and keyboard. I replaced batteries in both. Only way I can fix it is by hard shutdown/restart. Is this a symptom of a greater problem or is there a simple fix?
