Q: iPhoto to Photos conversion

I recently uploaded all my photos on my iMac from iPhoto to Photos and onto iCloud for backup.

All of my custom albums in iPhotos safely made it thru the conversation but I am having a few issues that I do not know how to fix or if they are fixable:

1. I use to be able to select which Albums I wanted to be uploaded to my iPhone and iPad, now every single Album in Photos is on both which I do not want, is this not an option anymore?

2. There are now many Albums on my iPhone and iPad that I do not want and I did not create, can they be permanently removed such as:  selfies, panoramas, bursts, screenshots, iPhoto events?

3. I see that camera roll has changed names to All Photos, but this now is showing every single photo that I have in the Photos Application, I do not want all of them on the phone, how do you correct this?

4. Because all of the photos are now uploaded to iCloud, it now seems to take a long time for all the photos in each album to show up on the iPhone, is there anyway to change this?

5. In each photo album I created a custom logo/icon so when I scroll thru all of the albums I could quickly identify which album was which, now each photo album shows the last photo taken in the iPhone window instead of the first image/photo within that album, is there anyway to change this too?

6. In the Photos application, there is an album called Last Import, I have a handful of photos in there and have moved them into other albums but if I go back into the Last Import Album and delete each photo, then the photo in the other album deletes as well?

Sorry for all the questions, been trying to figure this out on my own and am struggling.

Thanks, Jodi

First - iCloud Photo Library is not a backup - it is a library syncing service - iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support

    see specifically

    Do I need a Backup?

iCloud Photo Library stores all of your original photos and videos in iCloud, but we always recommend you keep back up copies of your Library. You can download your photos and videos from iCloud to your computer and store them as a separate library, transfer them to another computer with Image Capture or Photos, or store them on a separate drive

1 - Selective sharing is not an option - as noted above ICPL is a service to keep all linked libraries identical - all additions, deletions and edits made on any device are made on all devices = for devices with limited storage you select to use optimized photos on that device

2 - no - system albums such as you list can not be modified or removed - they are part of the system

    3 - You can not - see #1

4 - no - have all devices complete their initial upload? Until they do  things are wonky - once the upload completed I found the continued updates to be quick - even when I have hundreds or even thousands of vacation photos to sync

5 - open the album on your Mac and right click on the desired photo - select make "key photo"

6 - of course - when you delete a photo from the library it is gone everywhere exactly like it was in iPhoto - exactly like iPhoto albums are not a place - they are for organization and are just a view of photos in the library

Is there any other application that will let you organize and select which

photos will be on display on your phone and not have all of them like

    iPhoto did?

An Apple tech told me the other week that iPhoto is no longer available and

I would need to start using Photos. I also needed to start using iCloud to get

any new photos back onto my iPhone or iPad, there was no other option,

    was this information incorrect?

I use to use iPhoto to organize my photos and iTunes to manually do backups and

select which albums and videos I wanted on my phone and ipad -- can I still do this

by undoing the iCloud automatic syncing? I would rather have control of what goes on

both devices than having everything on them.

As is often the case Apple employees are totally off base

as I posted and provided multiple Apple official links you can use iTunes sync to get photos to an IOS device - you can use a USB connection with image capture or itunes sync to get photos off an IOS device - you also can use MyPhotoStream to move photos both ways although it is not really selective either

and iPhoto is still fine - you need the current version of iPhoto (9.6.1) to run iPhoto under OS X 10.10.x and 10.11.x - some day a future upgrade to the OS will break iPHoto but all upgrades are optional so you can use iPhoto today and as long as you want

AS to not using ICPL - personal choice - personally I love it - it makes life much easier and is much more powerful than manual syncing - but you can do manual syncing if you choose

forgive me for not understanding what AS to not using ICPL means?

how do you organize all your photos?

i've tried looking for the iphotos 9.6.1 download and cannot find it.

ICPL - what we have been discussing iCLoud Photo Library  --  You do have to use it - I do and like it but some people do not use it - it is your choice

for iPhoto 9.6.1 - Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store - but since it has a limited life I recommend learning and using Photos

AS to organizing - mostly Photos automatic organization into years/collections/moments - for me that works well

I do use faces and keywords but mostly use the basic Photos organization
