What do you mean reset the remote, if the battery is dead it needs charging.

That's correct, but I was telling you how you would keep track of how much charge it had in ongoing circumstances.

That might be because the battery is flat or because there simply is no connection between the remote and the Apple TV. You might try pulling the plug on the Apple TV and then trying again. If that doesn't help, put it on charge for ½ an hour or so and see if that helps, if not report back.

Feb 17, 2016 4:59 PM in response to ckuanby jmikecruz,i downloaded the app. many thanks for telling me about that. i'm not sure what the problem was, to be honest. it's working now. and the battery is almost fully charged, so it must have just been some strange glitch. ?

It should only take a few seconds to reconnect when any button is pressed on the remote, but this can take longer or become quite problematic if there is any interference at all.
