Final Cut 10.2.3 spinning wheel at every mouse click

Final Cut 10.2.3 stops responding (spinning wheel) when ever I click on a clip, timeline, etc. I am running Mac OS 10.11.3 on the MacPro (Mid 2012). Over the last copy of days it has been getting slower day by day. Spinning wheel for a few seconds and then I was able to continue, but now ever move results in the spinning wheel. I am not sue whether the problem resulted after the upgrade of either the operating system or Final Cut as both happened recently.

Mac Pro (Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), Final Cut 10.2.3

Thanks for your suggestions. I read the article suggested and feel that the problem may have caused by material being used from an unknown source. I am still working on the problem which has caused considerable disruption to my problem and considerable loss of time.
