I have purchased two USB-C to USB cables to get my new Macbook up and running and both of them will not accept a USB. It feels like they are poorly manufactured and it won't fit. Is this common? Is there a trick that I don't know?

Ah yes, They are both genuine Apple products. I took them to a local computer store and they showed me how to line them up just right and then push with some force to get them on. So actually they are not defective - just very tight.
