I have moved my files from my macbook to icloud. when i try to open a file either directly from word or through finder the file will not open. if i move the file to desktop the file will open. any suggestions?
Did you upload the file to the iCloud Drive from the Mac you're trying to open it with? If you are on the same Mac you don't need to go to iCloud.com to access the file. Go to the iCloud Drive on your hard drive and open it there:
If you're on a different Mac then you have to download the file to the Mac before you can open it.
Only Apple apps like Pages, Numbers and Keynote which have online versions of the app can edit a document directly in iCloud.com.
You need a viewer to view those files - not sure if the Word application on the computer is able to access the files on the cloud - you may want to either try to save the file in Pages to access it in iCloud or store it on OneDrive where the native Word viewer will allow you to render it
You don't indicate how you moved files to iCloud and "should be able to open a word document from icloud" isn't clear as to exactly what you mean. If you mean that you are using an internet browser and going to https://www.icloud.com/#iclouddrive then no, it is not possible to edit the file directly from there.
Do you have Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive turned on in your Mac? If you do, then any file that you moved to iCloud Drive will also have a local copy on your Mac and you should have no issue opening or editing the file -- i.e., it should behave like any other file on your Mac with the exception that any changes saved will also be saved to iCloud.

Not really - FoxFifth offers a really good explanation - I had not thought of that as I use OneDrive to sync my own documents (40 GB versus 5 GB in iCloud) but yes - that mimics what you describe - once a document has access to the Word.exe files it opens - if you are saving it in iCloud alone - not sure that that is going to allow you to edit the document without in some manner opening it on your computer
Your pivotal statement there is "I am using Office for Mac" true - but that is on your computer not in the cloud
