It's unclear whether you are trying to get data from Numbers into Pages or whether you are working in Pages. (This is a forum for Numbers for the Mac).
Assuming you are working in a table in Pages then the behavior is similar to a table in Numbers. If you want the values in one of the columns to go 1,2,3 etc, up to the number of rows, then try entering 1 in the first row and 2 in the second row. Then select the two cells, hover until you see the yellow dot and drag that down. The trick (just as it is in Excel) is to select two cells before dragging, not just one.

What procedure are you using to insert the column into Pages? What happens?
Posting screenshots and a description of what you are doing and what does (or does not) happen will help us assist you
THanks for responding Wayne!
what I did in pages was insert two columns for information to be typed, I also inserted 2 more columns to the left of each of them, All I wanted to do was format the smaller columns to numbering from 1 to whatever the count ends up. (I thought the transition from Windows word / excel would have been easier ). I tried using the sort ascending after I highlighted the column, once I started to drag down from number 1, all of the columns fill with the same number.
Thanks for any help you can offer!
Doug
SG,
Thanks for the information, your answer was right on. I appreciate the feedback and didn't think it was as hard as I made it!

When using sophisticated software at times I suspect we all make things much more complicated than they should be. Then the next day they can seem pretty simple.🙂
