Q: iCloud Question

Hi all -

My daughter has an old macbook with os10.6.8 and a iPhone 5 with os 9.2.i.  Both use the same apple id and iTunes account.  The macbook does not have the hd space to further update the os and therefore is not able to sign onto iCloud.com.  My question is: can she sign on to iCloud.com with just her phone? She wants to be able to optimize photo storage on her phone in order to gain storage w/o effecting all the photos she has on her old macbook. Thanks for the help.

Yes. She can use iCloud.com from any computer with a web browser and an internet connection.

I assume you are talking about using iCloud Photo Library?

You cannot access the icloud website directly on an iPhone.

However, the iPhone is capable of using iCloud storage via one of the Apps that connect to iCloud such as the Photos App, or even the iCloud Drive App.

Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:

    • On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
    • On your Mac, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.

If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

I think you answered my question. So am I correct that through her photo app on her phone she can optimize the photo storage on her phone and put her iPhone original photos in the cloud without effecting in any way the photos on her macbook? It probably makes no sense, but the fact that both devices shared the same apple id and iTunes account is what had me concerned.

Thanks so much for your help.

It is worth noting that depending on the size of her collection of photos, she will most likely need to upgrade her iCloud Storage plan.

Optimizing the Photos on the iPhone should not affect the Photos on the Mac as long as you don't change settings on the Mac.

As explained in the excerpt above:

All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device.

    and

Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.

Which means the photos on your Mac should remain as full sized originals.

I think you are probably correct. Of course what will really solve her problem is when she is able to get a newer macbook. The problem she has is that she keeps bumping up against her limits with her iPhone taking pics of her two you kids (1-3). I figured if she was able to set up a cloud account on her phone she could than gain considerable space by being able to optimize her photo storage. Hopefully that will hold her over until she can update her macbook.
