On my MacBook Pro "Other" is taking up a lot of storage. How to delete?

Depending on the Mac OSX version, using "About this Mac' to view free space will give inaccurate results due to a known bug. There are two methods that will give you accurate free space readings:
1) Highlight the hard drive icon and press the SPACE bar to get this:
2) Right-click on the hard drive icon and select "Get Info" in the resulting contextual menu to get this:
If either method shows MORE "free" or "available" space (depending on method) than the report in "About this Mac," you need to reindex the Spotlight database:
