iPhone 6 temperamental when charging

Hi,

I started to develop iPhone 6 charging issues a few months ago where the phone would not always make contact to charge.

I have tried to clean the port from lint/dust and also changed back to Apple OEM cable and charger but the issue is getting much worse over time and now I get a message (with OEM Apple charger and cable) that accessory may not be certified so it may not charge.

I would take the phone to the shop, but I have had it for a little over a year, not sure how they would be covered out of warranty

Thanks

Hi pred02,

Temperamental charging doesn't sound good. Thanks for the troubleshooting you have done so far.

That charging message is discussed in this article.

Charge your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

If an alert says that your accessory isn't supported or certified

These alerts can appear for a few reasons: Your iOS device might have a dirty or damaged charging port, your charging accessory is defective, damaged, or non Apple-certified, or your USB charger isn't designed to charge devices.

Follow these steps:

  1. Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device.
  2. Restart your iOS device.
  3. Try a different USB cable or charger.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.
  5. Contact Apple Support to set up service.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

"switched back to OEM Apple cables" is a red flag here. use of non-OEM charging cables can, and does, damage the charging logic chip on the board. That chip controls the function of recognizing a usb cable from input through the charge port.

your first step is making sure you don't have mechanical blockage or corrosion at the charge port--a microscope can help here. After that, rule out bad charge port, then consider the charging logic chip on the board.

apple can help you out of warranty with an option to buy a refurbished phone for $299. An independent repair shop can help you fix this phone for less. Find a shop that will not charge you anything unless they can solve the whole problem, not all shops are able to do board repair if that's what you need.

note: it is possible that Apple could deny your out of warranty swap option if you pursue independent repair, but I've never seen this actually happen.

the good news is that this is a solvable problem!

best of luck.
