Q: My USB-C VGA multiport does't communicate with external hard drive or external display when charging through the USB-C.

I have a USB-C VGA multiport with the 3 outputs (USB-A, VGA, USB-C).  When I am using my battery I can use my USB-A for an external hard drive and VGA for my external monitor.  When my battery goes low and I plug in the USB-C charger through the USB-C port on the multiport adapter I suddenly lose all communication between my external hard drive and monitor.  If I unplug the USB-C charger then I am able to re-connect using the multiport adapter.

Is there any way around this?  I use my macbook as my only computer so it's a bit difficult to have to suspend everything that I am doing if I need to charge my battery.

MacBook, iOS 9.2.1
