Feb 19, 2016 11:44 AM in response to LonsLadyby KiltedTim,Should we assume you did not have a backup?
Take your laptop in for service. It may or may not be recoverable. We don't have anywhere near enough information to make that determination.

Feb 19, 2016 12:00 PM in response to LonsLadyby LarryHN,The simple answer - restore your backup - if you are using TimeMachine see Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support and http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
If you are using other backup software see the manual for the software you are using
Or downloading from iCloud Photo Library is you are using ICPL
Or possibly Target mode will work
If you are not using backup software or ICPL then this unfortunately is is an expensive and tough lesson
Options then include purchasing a disk enclosure and if the disk drive is still working then having the disk drive from the laptop installed in it and using it as an external drive
If the disk drive is not working then you need a very expensive data recovery service and the best you can hope for is recovering the originals of your photos from the masters (or originals) folder losing any organization and modifications you have done in iPhoto or Photos which ever undisclosed software you are using
Good Luck
