Yes I have a "pictures" folder and it contains: a "photos library.photoslibrary" on the el capitan drive.

On the "time machine" drive there is an '"iphotos library" one folder at the bottom of the pictures folder. Is this the folder that is should restore, does it have all the "jpg, event, title, date and keyword'? that will go into the new photo app" when it is restored? does it take the place of the "photos library.photoslibrary" on the el capitan drive?

thanks for you time and effort... 🙂

thanks again

What version of iPhoto were you using before you upgraded to El Capitan. If you would like to keep running iPhoto

whilst evaluating Photos you can read this article, it mentions Yosemite but the same goes for El Capitan.

your copy of iPhoto must have been registered under your Apple ID in the App Store.

Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

Here is a link to a discussion from a couple of months ago, which may have the answer you want.

Import iPhoto library to Photos

Also there is no "user/home folder/Pictures folder"

The only "iphoto" I purchased new came with the iMac (snow leapord). Which I kept updated (via iTunes) within the limits of the 10.6.8 sw.

I never purchased any other version of iphoto, It did everything i needed in my photo management.. I then was advised to go to el capitan to take advantage of a new printing system, So here I am.

Will I have the same functionality on the photo app as before,( events, smart folders, keywords etc) as I had in iphoto after I restore or migrate the library. OR do I have to go back to my basic original s/w and/or can I go back...?

thanks for you effort

You will have an experience that is largely similar but there are differences. Photos is a more capable app, but uses a concept called Moments instead of Events.

If you did not have a current version of iPhoto before upgrading then there is nothing you can do as iPhoto is no longer sold and older versions don't run on El Capitan.

So you do have a Pictures folder. In that you also have Photos library and iPhoto libraries.

If you press the option/alt key down whilst starting Photos you will get the Choose Library dialogue where you can

select the library you want to use. For example you could choose the iPhoto library, then you could export it to a 'named' folder on your desktop.

Quit Photos. Start Photos again with the option/alt key pressed, Choose library, choose your Photos library, and once Photos has started you could import

the exported images from iPhoto from the folder you created on your desktop. Photos will now show both sets of images in the one library.

Alternatively you can go back to Snow Leopard, and keep iPhoto.

If you decide to upgrade to El Capitan again, make sure you are prepared, make sure your third party apps have updates available

for El C and that any peripherals (printers etc) are able to function in El C check for drivers etc.

You can make a genius appointment at your local Apple Retail Store to get them to help you out with

installing El Capitan.

Again thanks for you patience. Your summary is great, a summary I pretty much understand. I was planning to contact a local certified Apple dealer to have my RAM updated. If after using you outlined procedure to load my many thousands of organized photos I am not happy with "photo" I have all the original info and discs to make a reload back to Snow Leopard.

Again thanks for your Patience, this community is so helpful for the slower of us! You and Trenece Devlin are much appreciated... Certainlly by Me...
