Cannot set fingerprint ID

When trying to add a new fingerprint, the first one in fact, it says that it failed and to try again later. This has been happening since I installed the latest ios update. There are no others to edit and none to delete, literally none exist. When trying to add the first one to unlock the phone with, it says attempt failed every time. Any helo would be greatly appreciated.
