Feb 19, 2016 5:01 PM in response to davidd10by OGELTHORPE,Have you tried a safe boot?

That might clear out enough data for you to access the HDD.
If that fails, try Target Disk Mode.

Did you try to log in per the link with the directions for a safe boot that I provided?
Try it again. If no success, the the only option is Target Disk Mode:

Or taking out the HDD, installing it in an enclosure and connecting it to a functioning Mac via USB.

Feb 20, 2016 3:11 AM in response to davidd10by OGELTHORPE,Installing an OSX should not delete any user data. That said, the fact is that one still may encounter problems so a backup is always recommended. The odds are on your side but there are no guarantees.

Feb 20, 2016 5:15 AM in response to davidd10by h_man,You can get cases which you put hard drives into, and so you can hook up your hard drive via USB into another computer if you need to access data that is still on it. From there you can try and navigate through it in Finder or the windows equivalent. If not you may have to investigate further into data recovery programs. A good one is iSkySoft Data Recovery: http://www.iskysoft.com/data-recovery-mac/
