If you mean AirPlay, that might be because the content provider has blocked AirPlay from working, have you checked that it should work.

It plays well on my imac; as soon as I connect to apple tv, the image on imc goes away and the mirroring reflects this absence of image..ie the mirroring mirrors a blank screen. Sound is available though. Software on apple tv is current

Apple TVYou can either choose the Apple TV from the AirPlay menu in iTunes and start the movie from your Mac or (recommended) start it from the computers app > rentals on the Apple TV using home sharing.
