After I downloaded some photos from my media card onto my iMac I got a msg box I've never seen before and I can't remember which option I chose. Now there are no photos in my iPhoto library and I can't open my original library up. I'm on OSX 10.9.5 and iPhoto 9.5.1.

No did not back up photos. Think the msg was to ask about choosing one of three choices and now I have a new photo library.

What happens when you try to open the original library? What is the error message?
no error message. I can see the original library with 29 GB and when I click open nothing happens. The open button flashes a bit
Are you trying to use the "File > Open" menu in Photos? To open the original library try double clicking it.
If that does not work, make a backup copy of the original library and try to repair it: Hold down the key combination "Option - command" while double clicking the library to open it.
Hi, when I go to File, Open is greyed out. When I'm at Go I also don't see Photos option. I am going through iPhoto > File > Switch to Library > Other Library and through that way I can see iPhoto Library with 29 GB and that was created in Sept 2014 when I first got my iMac. I'm not quite sure how to backup copy of original library. Don't have an external hard drive...
