Q: Help - Lost hard drives data when used with FW or USB???

I have built an archive of photos (I am a photographer) using a eSATA 2-bay Wiebetech RTX220QJ enclosure with my old Mac pro.

I now have a shiny new iMac (27" 5k) and was planning to use a Synology NAS instead. It said all my archive drives would be erased if I continued - not good. I then tried my Wiebetech RTX220QJ with FW800 to my MacBook Pro, which said that the disk was not readable and should it be initialised?

I then tried the RTX220QJ with FW800 to the laptop, same thing. I then tried it to my old MacPro with FW800 which also said it couldn't read it.

Now I started to worry. My Mac Pro is crashing quite a lot and I have no idea how to save my archive - it also looks like I may have to transfer it onto new disks, but this is not possible without the Mac Pro crashing - I tried. Also, we are talking about 5 HDDs and backups, so a lot of work.

I am getting a bit stressed by all this and wasted a lot of time. If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful!

Hi Nick:

Have you tried to see if Disk Utility can see your drive?

Also this is the program Apple uses to analyze your drive. http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
If your information is very important, this might be worth a try.

Also I see it also uses USB. Have you tried to connect via USB?

HI Kim,

I tried Disk Utility, but it shows up as a 1.8TB disk. When I tried the RTX220QJ it said it was a 2.2TB drive... Not sure if it is only made to work with drives up to a certain size.

I will try the diskwarrior...

I did try USB, but it was exactly the same as the FW.

What size are the drives inside the RTX220QJ? It holds 2 drives, do you have 2 drives inside? Are they RAIDed.

You said you tried disk utility and it showed up as 1.8 TB. Is this ls this looking at the external drive.
Then you said " When I tried the RTX220QJ is said it was 2.2TB drive ". What do you mean by this.

Hi Kim,

I can't do a screen shot, now as the MacPro won't even start up now! Grey screen of death and it keeps saying restart, and some text on the left side - stuff about "Kernal trap page 14=fault...BSD process name responding to current thread:launch ctrl...Mac OS Version:not yet set..."

All gobbledygook to me!

Main problem is my accounting software is on there...

Maybe this technote may help. Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
