Have been trying to assign a custom ringtone (or any ringtone/alert) to incoming mail to both GMAIL account and the IPAD mail app, no sounds, no luck.
Too Too many paragraphs and volumes of suggestions on the web that supposedly work but none do.
A short, simple a) yes it can be done and how or b) no it can't is all I am looking for.

Are you using the separate Gmail app, and then the native Mail app? You can set an individual sound to an incoming mail account in Settings>Notifications>and then select the individual mail account. As far as Gmail, I'm not sure if that app has a place to set the incoming mail sound.
Let me address the native Mail app again. Why are you saying that you cannot set a sound? There are two different places to set sounds, the default sound for mail in Settings>Sounds, and then the separate area I described in my post, Settings>Notifications>Mail>select the individual account sound.
To verify, I have two separate email accounts on my iPhone 6s, using iOS 9.2.1. I just went exactly where I instructed in Notifications, and changed the sounds for each of the mail accounts. I then went to the computer and sent mail to each of the accounts. The individual mail accounts each played the individual sounds that I set.
Well, glad to hear you got it sorted. As far as the Gmail app, you may need to check that app separately, to see what kind of sound settings it has. I do not use it, so I couldn't begin to tell you about it, or what sounds you could use. Good luck with that one, but someone that uses it may pop in here before you have to resort to contacting Google.
cant set sound to native or gmail app, tried both. Same comment is posted on the net. Anyone else have any idea?
What happens when you go to Settings>Sounds and chose a sound for Mail?
NO sound Chris, I have done exactly what you described, no luck. Volume is up, i can listen to music. Using Ipad air 2, 9.2.1 thx
So, you are getting no sound whatsoever, it isn't that you cannot set individual sounds? Do any notification sounds work?
I Can set and here it play when i assign it, but if i send a test email, no sound notifying mail has arrived
i can chose a sound, but it wont play when mail arrives.

OMG, GOT IT. IPAD Air 2, swipe from bottom up, shows a mute icon. Turned it off, here clicks when i type now and email app plays sound when email arrives. Still not on gmail app though.
