Q: text alerts

When my Iphone times out I do not receive text alerts.  Do I have to keep the phone open to receive my test messages.  I was on the phone with a technical support person and that is what she said.  It used to alert me before all the upgrades.  Anyone else have this problem or have a solution

Check: Settings - Do not Disturb = Off.
