Sharing garageband projects between ipad and Mac via wi-fi

Hi, I'm working on a garageband project with my friend. I'm using an Ipad, she's using Mac. How can I share a project with her, so that she can import it, edit and record new instruments to it? And I mean without plugging in but via the Internet. I've already exported the .band file to Itunes, but I have no idea how a user of a different account can find it and import into her garageband, and then edit it and sens it back again to me. After all, that's what garageband was made for, wasn't it?

You should be able to export a GarageBand for iOS project to iTunes, then use the File Sharing area to copy that to your computer. You could then send the file to the other party via email or Dropbox. Once GarageBand for OS X has edited it however it cannot generally be moved back to GarageBand for iOS.

Thank you very much! Fortunately, I've found a way to import the file back to Ipad using an app called DAW. Once I save the file in DAW, garageband offers to import the project from there.

Where did you find that App? I cannot find it at the AppStore. Is "DAW" the complete name?

Can you really open a Garageband project edited in GarageBand on a Mac again on your iPad using this App? That would be marvelous.

DAW costs about 5 dollars and I don't know if this trick works more than once, because I never needed to do this again (we've been working on the same project ever since).

GarageBand should be able to import a bounced down .m4a as shown in the video without needing a third party app. I assumed the aim was to take a working .band project file from an iOS device out to GarageBand for Mac for editing and then back again, maintaining the project as multiple tracks that can still be individually edited. Presently such a round trip doesn't seem to be allowed.

I couldn't agree more. I've bought an Ipad only for the purpose of music collaboration with my friend. I don't know if it's the same abroad, but for Polish people Ipad is quite a costly purchase. I'm still paying back the loan for it. Imagine my exasperation and disappointment when we realised that such a simple and necessary thing (exporting, editing and importing again) is impossible. After all, it an Ipad, so perhaps Steve Jobs and his team never imagined somebody could want to work with other people, not only me, myself and I. Uhhhh...

Actually, garageband doesn't offer to import the project, but you can paste it from the pasteboard, as shown in the video linked above.

GarageBand on an iPad and a Mac are very different applications. They are written for different architectures, different operating systems, and a very different user interface. You have touch instruments on an iPad and play it like a musical instrument. On a mac there is no touch screen, and to play an instrument I have to plug in a guitar or a keyboard. I use the iPad to make music, and the mac to edit and arrange it. Because the processor and storage of an iPad is limited compared to a Mac, it is unlikely, that we will be able to open GarageBand for Mac projects on an iPad in the near future. You can import the audio files bounced by GarageBand for Mac into a GarageBand project on the iPad, if you manage to add them to your Music.app library.

Our band has all mac products. We use Air Drop between iphones, ipads, and mac books to send the .band project so we can all edit or share more tracks. It's easy then anything else we found. If you have an iphone or ipad open the GarageBand app, press the select in the upper right, then tap the project you want to send, then press the box with the up arrow in upper left corner, then select AirDrop. It will then ask if you want to send the audio file or .band project. Now press .band project. That's it. Just make sure on both devices to have Air Drop on. :-D
