Here's info about iTunes Store movie rentals

About renting movies from the iTunes Store - Apple Support

If a movie is in HD (high definition), you cannot play it on an iPod nano, because the resolution is too high for the nano's screen.  For a movie purchase, if you pay for the HD version, you can also download the SD (standard definition) version at no additional cost.  But for a rental, I don't think you can do that...  You rent it as either HD or SD, because you only download it once.

Also, the linked document says this... "Watch movies on the following devices...  An iPod classic or iPod nano (3rd, 4th, or 5th generation)."  6th gen iPod nano cannot play videos, but 7th gen can.  However, it is not mentioned in that sentence, so you if your iPod nano is 7th gen, you may not be able to watch rented movies on it, even if you rented the SD version.
