Each of these (and associated linked support pages) have details that may be a reason

for the iPhone to not be functional in the hands of anyone, after given up or sold unless

it is correctly handled by the person whose ownership and user accounts are cleared.

Go to settings find my iPhone TURN OFF.

Then restore iPhone back to factory settings.

After that iphone can be set up for new user .

Ps before you do this is iphone running the latest ios 9.2.1 if not update first over your WiFi .

Anyway, whatever was done with the iPhone after your dad took possession

may or may not affect your ability to hands-on correct lack of preparation to

the iPhone which should have been done before you gifted the phone to him.

When you get the phone back back from your dad, you can try to see what

you can do with it, following the Apple support articles in previous thread,

and if you can't get it to work contact an Apple Store with genius bar to set

an appointment to have someone help you. Time wise, that's most efficient.

You may ask the Store people what you should have with you, when taking

a phone in for issues; and if your dad managed to set an Apple ID or other

account action in the phone, that may also need to be unlocked or erased.
