Q: I had iphone 6 screen replaced from a store called Batteries and Bulbs for $185 and it was disabled so I tried to restore by connecting to itunes but home button was not working. The store then took it for 3 mths to fix but it went in error 53! HELP

I had iphone 6 screen replaced from a store called Batteries and Bulbs for $185 and it was disabled so I tried to restore by connecting to itunes but home button was not working. I took it back to Battery and Bulbs in Northfield NJ  where I had the screen repaired and the owner told me he would fix it and he would call me when it was ready. Long story short, he had my iPhone 6 for 3 months and was avoiding me and when I went to the store and saw him face to face he gave me excuse after excuse and said that the phone was so damaged that he was waiting for parts and any day it would be ready. I told him I just wanted it back and he just kept giving me excuses that it was completely disassembled just waiting for the parts to come in and he could not risk losing parts by putting it back together so to give him a few more days.! finally after 3 months and 2 weeks he called and said it was ready and I was so angry when he said I owed him another $110 and that  basically had a brand new phone but I just had to connect to iTunes because it was still disabled. I didn't argue abut the $110 because I just wanted to finally have the phone back in my possession. I got it home and immediately connected to iTunes to begin factory reset so I could then restore with my apple id. It started to reset and then I got the error 53! I remembered that the owner of Batteries and Bulbs was really shady and didn't make me sign anything like he had when I got screen fixed first time when he said he had make official record of the repair in the computer that would show if my serial number was looked up and he could no return it to me until he completely entering the information about the repair in the computer. He also said "now if you by any freak reason the iPhone is TOO BROKEN just bring it back and I will give your money back".  But I was so confused because it was perfectly working and just showed the connect to tunes screen! Then after doing some research online about error 53, I quickly learned that the problem stemmed from the home button and I took it back to Battery and Bulbs and spoke to the owner who played dumb and kept saying your  home button was hanging off when you brought it in to have screen replaced but it was still working and the phone still functioned but if it was not face up , the home button was attached on one side and other would lift off so that is why I had to get the screen fixed immediately for $185 but this ended up almost 4 months and a complete nightmare and another $110! He then said we will work something out when I literally was crying to him about this ordeal and the fact that I bought the iPhone 6 the day it came out at Best Buy and I was not due for an update so I paid $855 on 9/19/14! And I then asked if I could have my original home button back and he said he didn't have it and to come back later and if he wasn't there he would have my phone and the money back with whoever was working. I went back and he of course was not there and I was given back the iPhone without a screen and home button and told that he took back the screen and home button so he could resell them since they were useless to me and he had no clue about money!!! I couldn't believe it and I went there that following morning and he only gave me $40 back because I needed a phone so I brought the old 5c that I went through sprint insurance for $200 deductible that sent me a refurbished iPhone 5c that literally had the top part of screen loose and hung off if upside down! That is why I bought the iPhone 6 the day it came out because I was so frustrated and just wanted an iPhone that was not damaged! I love Apple products so much but I am so frustrated because of all these problems and now I am out well over $1000 for just the iPhone 6. I still have my receipt and I can not get any help from Apple and I am forced to go back to a Samsung phone that I really dislike simply because I had no problems like this and honestly they are good to their customers. I have a shell of a iPhone 6 because of error 53 and Battery and Bulbs said that this was all because of a recent update that he called "bricked" my iPhone and any updated iPhone rendering them completely useless and there was no fix and to contact a lawyer was my only option. Please I am asking Apple and the community for any help.

Apple have since released a fix for error 53 (a couple of days ago). What state is your phone in now? Does it have a screen and home button on it? If so, try restoring it again.

    Follow the instructions here:

If you see error 53 and your iPhone or iPad gets stuck on the 'Connect to iTunes' screen - Apple Support

Follow the instructions exactly. Make sure you have updated iTunes on your computer.

Your post is very hard to understand. Large blocks of text with no paragraph breaks are very difficult to read. Try shorter sentences focusing on your technical issues.

Please format your posts better in the future.  That's very difficult to read, and I admit I just skimmed through.

Question:  Why would you pay $185 for an iPhone 6 screen replacement from an unauthorized service center when the cost from Apple to do so is only $109?

Now, having read all of that in an easier to read format:

You chose to have an unauthorized service center perform service on your device.

Apple seems to have decided to enforce their option to refuse service for the device.

At this point, your best option short of purchasing another device, is to seek out one of the few independent repair shops that do actual quality work.

Normally, I would qualify that doing so would void your warranty.  But that's already happened.  Unless you want to try to contact Apple again and plead your case, then this is your only real option.  I'd also consider contacting a lawyer and filing a claim against B&B.  Haver you tried speaking to their corporate point of contact?

I can't imagine how frustrating that entire experience must be for you---it was painful to even read it!

Let's try to get you some help.   Tell me more what you mean by "I still have my receipt and I can not get any help from Apple"

Are you near an Apple store?
Your options at Apple are to have them do a screen replacement for you for $109 which will come with a new home button that they can program to have touch ID working.  If you have frame damage, they can't do it.   They may decline you because you can't present your original LCD which has recycling value and is part of their business model on the $109 deal.   I would think with your sad story that it might be worth a shot to try.

Your other option at Apple is to just turn in what is left of your phone and pay the $299 out of warranty swap fee and get an Apple refurbished phone.  Before you go, call them up and ask if they will take it for OOW swap missing a screen/home button.  If they say no, stop by any shop other than BatteriesandBulbs and ask them to take pity on you and put a cracked original screen on it.   I know you had a bad experience with the Sprint 5c, but there really is a big difference between Apple refurbished and carrier refurbished phones.  Carrier refurbished phones are terrible.

Your option at independent repair is getting a new screen and new home button---that will not have touch ID.  Your phone should pass restore now that Apple has "repealed" error 53.  Pick a shop with great reviews, a good warranty, and one that will not charge you anything until your phone is working.  Lack of a pre-check at intake is a big red flag.

Then it is time to get your money back!  The good news is that BatteriesPlus is a franchise, so you may have better luck approaching their corporate office with your complaint.  Edit your story when you're not so upset about it, and just present a timeline of the facts.

Best of luck Kirstie, what a terrible experience!
