Q: How do I import and continue working with old iDVD projects?

I have a few old iDVD project files from 2008.  I never burned actual DVDs from them.  At the time I played them directly on the laptop.

Today I have an iMac with El Capitan OS X Version 10.11.3.  It has iDVD version 7.1.2 (1158).

I have tried to open these old files with the new iDVD.  The program opens and doesn't complain about the file at all but as far as I can tell it simply ignores it.  With the program running I can find no evidence of any content.  It is stuck on the Themes page.  No other options show anything.

Am I missing something?

More generally, how do I get inside these files?  I'd like to get access to the content in them and actually burn a DVD.  Is it possible?

Any advice and suggestions would be most appreciated.

Are you able to create a new project, complete with a theme? Do you have all of the themes installed, from iDVD version 1 thru iDVD version 7?  If not perhaps the project has an older version that you don't have installed.

To get inside the project package Control (right) - click on the file and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu:

However, if you added movie files to the project and they were not encoded they will not be in the package.  They will only be referenced. If the assets have been encoded they will be in the Contents/Resources/MPEG.nobackup folder but will be missing the audio.  Those files will look like this and play, video only, in Quicktime Player:

This was helpful although it has not solved my problem.  I was able to find the movies that are part of the project so thank you for that.  However, the audio does not seem to be present.

I am able to create new projects so I don't think there is a problem with iDVD per se.

How do I know if the themes that are installed are "all" of them?  I don't recall doing anything special to get this installation so perhaps I missed something.  I'm going to try a reinstallation and see if that helps.

    Thanks!

I don't think reinstalling will help but go ahead.  The problem lies with the project file.  To avoid this in the future for every project save as an archived project which will copy all media files used in the project into the project package.
